ABOUT HEATHER

Dr. Heather Thompson, DOM, MS, LAc, LMT, BCTMB

Heather Thompson: About

I am a licensed acupuncturist, licensed and board certified massage therapist, and Doctor of East Asian Medicine practicing healing and wellness therapies in Baltimore.  I specialize in sports injury/recovery, chronic pain management, fertility/pregnancy/postpartum support, and anxiety.

Native to Baltimore, I graduated from Loyola University Maryland with my B.A. in Psychology in 2006. While working, I pursued part-time/evening massage therapy classes at the Baltimore School of Massage. I completed coursework in 2008 and have been practicing as a Licensed Massage Therapist in MD since 2009. I hold a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland, which I completed in 2011. That same year, I began my Master of Acupuncture program at Maryland University of Integrative Health-MUIH and in 2014, after completing my coursework and clinical practicum, I became a Licensed Acupuncturist in Maryland. I finished the Chinese Herb Program at MUIH in May 2016, completing my Master of East Asian Medicine. I then pursued the Doctor of East Asian Medicine program at MUIH and obtained my degree in 2018.

My perspective on health and healing is an integrative one. I believe all facets of an individual’s mind, body, and spirit to be essential in distinguishing patterns of disharmony, determining treatment goals, and creating a treatment plan that will best suit them. I am a passionate professional and believe this is conveyed through my work, so it is important to me that my patients have as much interest in their well-being as I do. I envision my patients developing a caring relationship with themselves so they may recognize, create, and take ownership of their own healing. My nature is to be adaptive-to help others grow and heal- so I encourage an adaptive relationship with my patients.

To me, acupuncture is an incredible means by which I can support my clients in management and even complete recovery of symptoms.  As a general practitioner, I work with clients who have a variety of clinical presentations, from anxiety and depression to plantar fasciitis, migraines, chronic low back pain, sports performance, and a multitude of other areas. I specialize in fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum support.

While the bulk of my massage practice focuses on patients dealing with chronic pain, injury trauma, or maladies associated with being a current/former athlete, I am also just as delighted to provide a relaxing massage for those seeking tranquility. My goal of treatment is to remain dynamic with my clients’ ever-evolving needs. I incorporate Orthopedic, Neuromuscular, Positional Release, Myofascial Release, Sports, Deep Tissue, and Swedish massage therapy principles into every session. If appropriate, I include stretches in my sessions and as education for clients to ease their discomfort between treatments. I also absolutely love supporting women through massage therapy for fertility, pregnancy, and post-partum and am rapidly expanding this specialization. I trained through Claire Marie Miller seminars and became an instructor to teach these modalities in 2016.

Over the course of my career, I have been privileged to work with the LA Rams, the Baltimore Ravens, help 70+ couples conceive, and achieve remarkable healing outcomes through treatment, such as helping patients with successful pregnancy after years of difficulty with infertility, helping patients fully recover from Bell’s Palsy, and helping patients regain their lives by living with less chronic pain.

I appreciate my patients’ privacy, thus I do not request their testimonials, however, most of my clients come to me by referral.

As much as I am passionate about healing others, I find it is essential to engage in my own self-care so that I can continue to give myself wholly to my clients during session. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, exercising, stepping on crunchy leaves, volunteering, hiking, traveling, eating dark chocolate, petting doggos, making babies giggle, and watching the Golden Girls.

I am honored to do this work and I look forward to meeting you!! I can be reached at 443-403-9747 or via email at Heather@WaypointIH.com.
